Carolling

On Christmas Eve my family and I went carolling. Candles and songsheets in hand, we wandered down the street in the growing dark. Across the oval, flames flickering in the light breeze, and wax spattering on our feet as we stepped, we had to dodge the sprinklers as they suddenly came on!

Down by the river we sat on tree branches and kicked our legs, and dribbled more wax on the tree, and on our paper, almost obliterating the words of the songs. And yes, we sang..

I wish I could show what it was like; the lights, the tang of eucalypt, frogs croaking, crickets chirping, mozzies buzzing. The breathing night..

Lover [ly]

I am a little bit in love. Maybe more than a little bit. One of the current objects of my affection is the poet Mary Oliver. So hard to choose which to share here!

Next Time

Next time what I'd do is look at
the earth before saying anything. I'd stop
just before going into a house
and be an emperor for a minute
and listen better to the wind
or to the air being still.

When anyone talked to me, whether
blame or praise or just passing time,
I'd watch the face, how the mouth
has to work, and see any strain, any
sign of what lifted the voice.

And for all, I'd know more -- the earth
bracing itself and soaring, the air
finding every leaf and feather over
forest and water, and for every person
the body glowing inside the clothes
like a light.

Morning Poem

Every morning
the world
is created.
Under the orange

sticks of the sun
the heaped
ashes of the night
turn into leaves again

and fasten themselves to the high branches ---
and the ponds appear
like black cloth
on which are painted islands

of summer lilies.
If it is your nature
to be happy
you will swim away along the soft trails

for hours, your imagination
alighting everywhere.
And if your spirit
carries within it

the thorn
that is heavier than lead ---
if it's all you can do
to keep on trudging ---

there is still
somewhere deep within you
a beast shouting that the earth
is exactly what it wanted ---

each pond with its blazing lilies
is a prayer heard and answered
lavishly,
every morning,

whether or not
you have ever dared to be happy,
whether or not
you have ever dared to pray.

Black Oaks

Okay, not one can write a symphony, or a dictionary,

or even a letter to an old friend, full of remembrance
and comfort.

Not one can manage a single sound though the blue jays
carp and whistle all day in the branches, without
the push of the wind.

But to tell the truth after a while I'm pale with longing
for their thick bodies ruckled with lichen

and you can't keep me from the woods, from the tonnage

of their shoulders, and their shining green hair.

Today is a day like any other: twenty-four hours, a
little sunshine, a little rain.

Listen, says ambition, nervously shifting her weight from
one boot to another -- why don't you get going?

For there I am, in the mossy shadows, under the trees.

And to tell the truth I don't want to let go of the wrists
of idleness, I don't want to sell my life for money,

I don't even want to come in out of the rain.

Successful night out Diving

Er, diving in what, you might ask?

That would be dumpsters (sorry, just no nicer way of putting it).

But hasn't it always been your dream to sneak through darkening alleyways, wirecutters in hand (just kidding. but not about the alleyways), plastic bags in pockets, rubbersoled shoes, wrestling with wet smelly mounds of rubbish in dark dank dumpsters?

I'm sure it has.

It was actually amazingly successful! We didn't get told off once - the closest we came was a few employees and security guys all coming from different places but heading in the general direction of our dumpster. I and my associate at the time simply picked up our box and waltzed smoothly away.
They didn't stop us.

Here's the loot:

2 bags of fruit/veg: apples, pears, nectarines, peaches, red onions and a cucumber
2 bags of perfectly good (though slightly squashed) doughnuts (from different shops)
a silk scarf in its wrapping
2 pairs new, 2 pairs good condition shoes
a bike seat
2 pkts pasta
1 pkt sugar
carton of sealed bottles of water
set of 4 noodle bowls and chopsticks, still in box
pencilcase, with mostly working pens, pencils, and a pair of scissors
choc-coated liquorice, snakes, and some other weird wrapped lollies
2 small saucepans
biscuit jar with sealed pkts of biscuits inside
coathangers (as many as could be desired!)
sweet clock (just needed batteries)
essence of awesomeness

Freegan Awesome Dumpster Ninjas!!!!!!!
To infinity and beyond! or something.

Psych Trivia (ie not-particularly-useful information!)

Stuff I thought you'd like to know...

Bodily features:
Seahorse (hippocampus - a part of the brain which is involved with memory)
Wings (pinna - your outer ears)
Snails (cochlea - inner ear)
Extra 'eyelashes' (cilia - found on your lungs and right up your nasal passage and in your cochlea)

Funny names:
Zajonc
Shams
Schacter
Chomsky
Crick
Gazzaniga
Lazarus
Plutchik
Poggendorf
Stroop (this is really cool, actually. The guy discovered that reading becomes so automatic for us that if you put words in different colours and ask people to say the colour instead of the word, they find it quite hard to do quickly. Especially if it is something like "GREEN" in the colour red. This phenomenon is called The Stroop Effect)

Random, other
aqueous humour - literally, 'watery fluid' - but it has to sound scientific, of course!
"Nodes of Ranvier" - sounds like it's straight out of a fantasy story!
Pacinian corpuscle - in your skin, senses vibration
Angular gyrus - brain area related to language & reading

and, did you know that all the colours we perceive are translated from information encoded from just 3 different coloured (well, 3 wavelengths) cones in our eyeballs!

That'll do I think.
